Driving Etiquette and SafetyThe driving safety and etiquette on the parking lot have become ridiculous.  We have parents parking in handicapped spaces that are perfectly healthy.  When one pre-school parent was told that there might be a handicapped person that could need the handicapped space she was parked in she said, “They can wait.”  Another pre-school parent is speeding through the parking lot about 7:30 in the mornings, parking in handicapped parking, leaving her car running with a child in the car while she brings her pre-schooler in. Other parents park across parking spaces or at the fire lane while they run their students in. Last Friday four people passed in the pick-up line with me standing there to indicate there is no passing.  Every afternoon and morning people are pulling out of the first row of parking spaces into the pick-up and drop-off lines or passing the cars in the lines.    I realize we are all in a hurry.  We live very busy lives.  But that is no excuse for rudeness and for risking the safety of our students.  I also realize the parking lot is busier in the afternoons because of middle school basketball practice.  Those parents have been asked to park in the second and third parking rows and not to pull out into the pick-up lines.  That’s where our parents need to park, too, if they plan to leave before the pick up line is complete. Please allow at least 15 extra minutes to drop off and pick up.  Do not park in handicapped parking.  This is unacceptable.  EHCA’s Super Rule is to treat others as you would like to be treated.  I want our parents to model this by being courteous and safe on the parking lot. Thank you.  I don’t want to approach people individually.  That is embarrassing for you and for me.  However, if I think you are putting our students in jeopardy, I will.  If I have offended you by this article, I apologize, but the majority of the parents will thank me for addressing this issue.
