Frequently Asked Questions

What does EHCA teach about evolution/creation?  What is EHCA's position on the age of the earth?

EHCA teaches evolution within the species as a theory.  The theory is taught when we reach that section of the textbook, but Creationism is also taught and the students are told that that is what we believe as Christians to be truth.  EHCA does not take a position on the age of the earth.  2 Peter 3:8 states, "But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day."  The Bible was not written as a science book.  God may have created the earth in seven 24 hour days or He may have created it over thousands of years.  The important fact that we teach is that it was God that created the earth and all things in it.

How can we access the Open Court reading series stories to review questions that were missed on assignments?

The Open Court Reading program is the Basal reading program for the school 1st-6th grade.  The students read the stories at school and do many activities with each story.  They usually cover a story a week.  At the end of that time they take a comprehension test over what they have read.  The teachers are responsible for going over missed questions and explaining why the question was missed.  We don't send the Open Court books home because students often read ahead.  Part of teaching comprehension is predicting outcomes and drawing conclusions.  That is done with the teacher and the students on each story.  If the student has already read the story, the skill cannot be taught as effectively.

Do all teachers implement the web site for communtication?

Last year the teachers set a technology goal for themselves which include maintaining a website and keeping grades and lesson plans on the computer.  Our teachers are at all different levels of computer literacy and comfort.  Some teachers already do all three.  Others started with one and are adding one a year.  By next year we hope to have all of our present teachers using the website for communtication.  We are also planning to purchase Snapgrades next year.  This is a program to record grades online.  Parents will be able to look at their child's grades any time.  They can see what assignments have not been turned in, etc.  We hope this will help with communication.

How close do the teachers at each grade level work together?

The teachers at each grade level work together weekly and often daily on planning.  They are expected to cover the same core curriculum lessons within a given week.  Due to enrichment schedules, they cannot always cover the same lesson on the same day.  Extracurricular activities and science and social studies units are more flexible.  They do not have to cover the same lessons or do the same activities in these areas.

What is EHCA's homework philosophy?

Homework usually increases as grade levels increase.  We do not believe in giving homework just for the sake of having homework.  It needs to be work that was not finished in class, work that needs to be drilled or practiced, or work in which the child needs extra assistance.

How many EHCA students have been accepted in prep schools or other private schools when they leave EHCA?

Most of our students that have applied to Albuquerque Academy, Sandia Prep, or Bosque Prep have been accepted.  Not all that have been accepted have chose to attend those schools.   This year one of our fifth graders applied to all three and was accepted by all three.  One of our eighth graders received an academic and athletic scholarship to Sandia Prep.  She was 1 or 5 students accepted this year.  Students that apply to Hope Christian School and Menaul School are also usually accepted.  Students that enter public middle school or high school are almost always placed in advanced classes.
